Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara co-founded the Dublin-based practice "Grafton Architects" in 1978. Teachers at the School of Architecture at University College Dublin from 1976 to 2002; Professors at Accademia di Architettura, Mendrisio; Visiting Professors in EPFL, Lausanne 2010 –2011; they held the Kenzo Tange Chair at Graduate School of Design at Harvard in 2010 and the Louis Kahn Chair at Yale, Autumn 2011. 

Projects completed in Ireland include private houses, the Urban Institute at University College Dublin, Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering Building at Trinity College Dublin, Schools for the Department of Education, Civic Offices and Arts Centre in County Meath, Social Housing and Mixed Use buildings in Dublin, and the design of motorway bridges in collaboration with Civil Engineers.

Grafton Architects were winners of the World Building of the Year Award in 2008, and were one of the five finalists for the Mies Van Der Rohe Prize 2009, for the Bocconi University project in Milan. The Department of Finance building in Dublin’s historic centre won the British Civic Trust award in 2009 together with the Architectural Association of Ireland Special Award 2009. The Medical School and Student Accommodation at the University of Limerick, Ireland was shortlisted for the Stirling Prize 2013. Grafton Architects won the Silver Lion Award at the Venice Biennale ‘Common Ground’ exhibition in 2012. Currently, Grafton Architects are part of a major exhibition in the Royal Academy in London:

Current building projects include: 

The School of Economics for the University of Toulouse 1 Capitol , France; a New Campus for UTEC University in Lima, Peru; Recently, they won two University Competitions: one for Institute Mines Telcom in Saclay /Paris University Campus and one for Kingston University, London, England.
